My Role

Overview

UPBEAT is a fitness and wellness app that helps families and friends stay healthy together. Users can set goals, track progress, and share achievements in a private group to build habits through mutual support.

Problem

User engagement is strong at first but quickly drops, with many uninstalling the app soon after. A lack of interaction features limits motivation and repeat usage, highlighting the need to design messaging that fits naturally and drives long-term engagement.

Solution

To boost engagement and retention, the app will add messaging feature to help users share goals, track progress, and stay connected through a seamless, interactive experience.

Target Users

  • Ages 18–34, tech-savvy, and on their phones daily

  • Social, budget-conscious, and motivated by community support

  • Value easy communication and staying connected through apps

User Research

Competitive Analysis

I analyzed top fitness apps to understand their strengths and gaps in social engagement.

  • Many apps focus on tracking progress but miss opportunities for real-time interaction.

  • Apps with goal sharing and community challenges create stronger long-term engagement.

User Flow

These user flows show how users move through key features like setting up the health dashboard and joining a friends challenge, helping to create a smooth and clear experience.

Usability Testing

I tested the fitness tracker, community feature, and friend challenges to evaluate clarity and usability.

  • 80% struggled to create a team, as the option was hidden in the messaging screen.

  • 70% said the scoreboard lacked activity details.

  • 33% found the date format confusing and misaligned with their expectations.

Revision

Guided by usability testing and user feedback, I made several key updates to improve clarity and navigation.

Final Prototype

Reflection

Designing this app highlighted the importance of clarity when presenting personal health data. Through usability testing, I learned that even small design improvements can make a big difference in reducing user confusion. Adding social features like group chats and shared goals also helped make the experience more engaging and motivating.
